PA Activities

The PA provides special curriculum enhancing programs and community enriching services including: the Creative Arts & Sciences Program, Mitzvah Sunday, the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon, the Lower School Summer Reading Program, and various other needs. Room parents and grade level representatives organize Pizza and Chinese Lunches, provide volunteers for school photos and other events at the school, and help teachers prepare for Milestone events, class activities, chaperoning field trips, and more.

Creative Arts Program

In partnership with the Newton Public School's Creatvie Arts & Sciences Committee, Schechter's Creative Arts committee receives $16,000 from the PA to provide high quality, educational enrichment programs in art, language arts, poetry, mathematics, music, science, social studies and Judaics. These programs complement the academic program and have become an integral part of the curriculum. The programs have included Audubon Ark, Engineers Teaching Algebra, Wingmasters, Art Quest, Night Skies, Bay Colony Educators, Wingmasters, the Science Discovery Museum, a political cartoonist, jazz musician, storytellers and numerous authors.

Outreach

This is a joint initiative with the Admission Office to welcome new SSDS families and set up mentoring with existing families.

Family Education

The PA coordinates a number of parent educational opportunities including parenting lectures with various speakers, and the annual Schechter Reads Book Club. This year’s theme is “The Secrets We Keep.” (Click here for the schedule.) The PA also offers more light-hearted instructional evenings such as Mah Jongg and poker tutorials and knitting lessons.

Community Building

The PA sponsors several wonderful programs that bring Schechter families together including: Family Fun Night, the Family Ice Skating Day, the Shabbat Exchange Program, the year-end Fun Run and the Family Movie Morning.
