MITZVAH SUNDAY TO SERVE GREATER BOSTON ORGANIZATIONS

March 6, 2011

On Sunday, March 6, more than 500 students, parents, siblings, teachers, staff and grandparents of Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston will roll up their sleeves, get busy and make a difference at the 11th Annual Mitzvah Sunday, a community service day. Projects include baking legions of sweets and treats for local police officers and firefighters, donating hair to Locks of Love, and making inspirational signs for Special Olympics athletes.

Recognizing that Schechter students perform acts of mitzvot (good deeds) and tzedakah (charity) year-round, this special event offers opportunities for families to work together to perform acts of loving-kindness. Mitzvah Sunday projects help the elderly, homeless, hungry and infirm; children who are less fortunate; communities in other lands; people in need; and law enforcement and military personnel. Families are encouraged to continue their contact with these organizations throughout the year.

New this year is a project to sort books, fill out book cards and add book pockets to create a library for Gan Shelanu, a new early childhood program opening in September. In another project, families will be writing letters of support to American and Israeli soldiers. Other Mitzvah Sunday projects include: creating picture frames for local Holocaust survivors; making activity booklets to help entertain young patients at Children’s Hospital Boston; making bedtime caddies for children staying at Second Step in Newton; sewing blankets for the littlest children served by the Family Nurturing Center; collaborating with Gateways, a religious school for Jewish children with special needs, to prepare hearty sandwiches, homemade desserts and trail mix for the Women’s Lunch Place, a daytime shelter; and much more.
